  1. Go to claude.ai → Settings → Features
  2. Enable the toggle "Search and reference past chats"
  3. Enable the toggle "Generate memory from chat history"
  4. Optional: Let Claude analyze your existing chat history for an immediate head start

You retain full control at all times – view, edit, or delete stored entries under Settings → Capabilities → Memory.


Memory Import/Export: Switching AI Tools Made Easy

Free for everyone since March 2026: you can transfer your memory from ChatGPT or Google Gemini to Claude.

How it works:

  1. Type this into your previous AI tool: "Give me your memories about me verbatim, exactly as they are stored"
  2. Paste the exported text into a new Claude chat
  3. Tell Claude: "This is my stored memory from another AI assistant. Please add this information to your memory about me."

Note: Processing happens once per day – imported memories may take up to 24 hours to appear.


For Power Users: Installing an MCP Memory Server

What Is an MCP Memory Server?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is Anthropic's open standard for connecting Claude to external tools. An MCP Memory Server gives Claude a structured, knowledge-graph-based memory – significantly more powerful than the built-in feature.

The advantages over built-in Memory are substantial. Token efficiency alone makes a strong case: 500 insights normally consume around 9,400 tokens, while an MCP server handles the same data with roughly 460 tokens – about 20 times less. Beyond that, you get no data loss after context resets, structured search within the knowledge graph, compatibility with agent pipelines like LangGraph, CrewAI, and AutoGen, and support across Claude Desktop, VS Code, Cursor, and other tools.


Option 1: Local Installation for Claude Desktop

Requirements:

For developers using Claude Code – active automatically since March 2026, no setup required.

Best Practices

Keeping Memory clean is worth the small effort it takes. Create a separate workspace for each client and project so contexts never bleed into each other. Plan a monthly review to delete outdated information – stale memories can quietly mislead Claude in ways that are hard to trace. Use Incognito mode for experiments and sensitive topics, and regularly check what is stored under Settings → Capabilities → Memory so nothing accumulates that should not be there.

On the privacy side, never store confidential client data or passwords in Memory. Always use Incognito mode for sensitive topics, and Enterprise users can manage Memory at the organization level for tighter control.

Training Memory effectively is also a skill worth developing. Actively correct Claude when something gets stored incorrectly. Tell Claude explicitly what to remember: "Remember: I always prefer TypeScript" works better than hoping Claude infers it. The more precisely you brief Claude upfront, the more efficiently the collaboration compounds over time.
